To ensure all saxophone students have the best chance at success, this guide provides a curated list of essential, recommended, and optional items for saxophone players. All products listed are reliable and appropriate for different skill levels.

Required Essentials

• Reeds

• Beginner: Rico (Orange Box) – Strength 2.0–2.5

• Intermediate: D’Addario Royal – Strength 2.5–3.0

• Advanced: Vandoren Traditional (Blue Box), V16, or D’Addario Reserve

• Mouthpieces

• Beginner: Yamaha 4C or 5C

• Intermediate: Selmer C*, Vandoren 

• Advanced: Vandoren Optimum, Rousseau Classic 

• Neck Straps

• Neotech, Protec Neoprene w/Comfort bar (Clarinet neck strap works as well!)

-I highly suggest getting a neck strap with a metal clip to ensure longevity

• Neotech Padded Harness or BG Harness

• Ligatures

• Basic: Rovner Dark, BG Standard

• Upgrade: Vandoren Optimum, Silverstein (advanced players)

Necessary Supplies 

• Reed Case (Holds 4–8 reeds, keeps them flat and aired out)

• Cork Grease

• Metronome/Tuner combo (physical or app)

• Music Stand for home practice

• Swab: Silk or microfiber swab for saxophone

• Pad Saver: Optional but helpful for water removal after playing

Purchasing Tips

- Buy reeds in boxes of 10 to save money and ensure variety.
- Avoid very cheap mouthpieces, ligatures, or straps—they often hinder development.
- Focus on upgrading the mouthpiece before investing in a new instrument.
- Check local music stores for student discounts or package deals.
- Used gear can be a great option—ask your teacher before buying.
